Formed in 1983,Box Art Group was inspired by our founder, the late Edward Payne, renowned for his stained glass windows. He had his studio in the village and his love of art in all its aspects was infectious. He encouraged all who joined the Group to pursue an individual style.

Box Art Group restarts on 10th September.
The group meets each week from September to June on a Thursday afternoon from 2.00 to 4.30 pm, with a much needed tea break at 3.00 pm. We enjoy a variety of activities each week and our members are involved in portrait painting, still life and free work.
The Portrait Group makes use of sitters who are paid a small fee and sometimes delight the artists with lovely hats or costumes – the local Town Crier was a particular hit. When the weather permits we can paint in the lovely surroundings of Box Village itself. Free work is usually based on working from photographs, sketches or other sources, such as the books available for loan from our library.
Our members use most of the available media, including watercolour, pastel, acrylic, oils and drawing with charcoal, pencil or pen and ink. Some members use mixed media to create abstract works. Examples of work can be seen on the web-site. We hold an annual exhibition in the Village Hall in October that lasts for three days.
We do not struggle to work alone; we have two tutors who work on a two-week cycle and help with advice and constructive criticism. In addition there are regular competitions which inspire adventurous work and creative responses to the challenges set by the tutors!
Occasionally we have workshops or demonstrations led by visiting tutors, these are usually professional artists who can guide us further in our work. Each year, when the hall is unavailable because of the local pantomime, we have a coach excursion to an exhibition of interest to members. Past visits have been to Cardiff, Birmingham, Compton Verney and Bath.
There are vacancies for new members, and enquiries regarding membership should go to:
