BOX THEN & NOW
A collection of photographs selected and displayed side by side,
to highlight how Box has (or in some cases has not) changed over the years.
One of the most noticeable changes in almost all recent photographs
is the much increased plant and tree growth in gardens, obscuring what
used to be panoramic views across the village.

Beehive The damaged but interesting photograph on the far left is dated "circa 1938", and would appear to have been taken shortly after the construction of the unusual, two storey flat-roofed extension. |

Old Stables Taken during the coronation celebrations of 1953, the picture on the far left shows the original stables on the right where the coal merchant, then living in Baycroft, kept his horses (now garages and a residence known as "Old Stables") |

Box Green House Now a single residence, Box Green House was once three cottages, one of which included a general store selling paraffin and animals foods for the villagers' poultry. |
|
Cross Cottages Cross cottages are better known by their individual names such as Waysmeet, Abana & Corner Cottage, & remain relatively unchanged, though the view across their pretty gardens, constituting "The Pen", is now obstructed by several large trees. |

The early photograph above is of the Halfway House. By the time the photograph above was taken it was already a public house, but still clearly showing its origins as a farmhouse and cottages. |

Halfway House The photograph on the near left was taken in 1965. At that time he pub and much of the adjoining land below it belonged to Whitbread Breweries. The spare land was later sold off, and on it was built a row of three large houses as well as Box Village Hall and car park. Renamed the Halfway Inn for a few years, the name returned to Halfway House in 2005. |

By 1998 the pub had been sold by Whitbread and become a privately owned freehouse (far left). Photograph near left was taken in July 2005 and shows recently modified extension. |
