BOX GARDENING CLUB
Membership
Everyone who loves plants and gardening is welcome to be a member, whatever their level of green-fingered expertise. Annual membership is just £10, or £15 per couple. We hope you see this as good value for more than ten activities and talks a year! Our membership secretary, Karen Bowrey, can be contacted on 832767 if you wish to join.
The other members of our committee are: Beris Hanks, Daphne Edwards, Joan Davis, Anne Mustarde, Chris French, Sarah Hemmings, Valerie Jarvis and Talei Herbert.
One benefit to members is access to discounted seed and plant purchasing. We have an arrangement with Fothergill’s, giving 40% discount on seeds per member. Joan Davis is the organiser for bulk orders and has details if you wish to know more (832951).
2008 Programme
Our programme leaflets for the current year are still available. If you would like one and are not a member, please contact me.
The Village Produce Show - Sunday August 31st
Despite dismal weather conditions in previous weeks, the Show was great fun, and a heartening number of villagers entered. As well as the usual classes for fruit, vegetables, flowers, plants and baking categories, villagers were able to enter a bucket of their best homemade compost. Village poets came out in force to pen a Limerick to do with the Show. Richard Dennis kindly presented the cups, medals and certificates to the winners of various classes and sections. (See below)
The Show was a happy event and enjoyed by all who entered (more next year please!) as well as by those who came along to see the results and enjoy tea and slices of carrot cake. Many thanks to the Committee who helped set everything up as well as put it all away and a special cheer for Sarah Hemmings, our hard-working Show Secretary.
There are three more evening talks before the end of the year:
Sept 16th: Tony Hunt, Box resident, on the Eden Project (a professional insider’s account)
Oct 21st: Timothy Walker, Director of Oxford Botanic Garden on Plant Classification.
You will learn much as well as be entertained, whatever your gardening rating.
Nov 18th: Jonathan Briggs – Mistletoe expert – presenting a Miscellany.
AND……..Dec 13th. CHRISTMAS PARTY (details all in good time)
The Club’s AGM will be on January 20th
All our evening meeting are at 7.30 pm (with coffee and tea) and talks begin at 8 pm.
New members always welcome. Contact Karen Bowrey on 832767 for more details.
