Box Improvers Bridge Club
Box Village Hall Thursday Evenings
After a prolonged break due to Christmas and the snow we will be recommenced in earnest on 21st January. As well as the normal club session starting at 7.15pm there will be a review of interesting points from the previous week starting at 6.45pm. Second year lessons will continue in the committee room at 7.30pm. There is also a beginners group on Wednesday evenings.
Last term’s innovation, a review of points of interest from the previous week prior to the regular play seems popular. I believe this contributes to an improvement in the standard of play at the club and it will be continued this year from 6.45pm for 30 mins. Last year’s beginners wish to continue lessons this term so there will also be lessons for improvers from 7.30pm this year.
We have tried this year to increase the pace of play very slightly whilst continuing to maintain a relaxed atmosphere with an element of competition. The club is an ideal place to gain experience. Recent beginners now make up about half the attendance at the club.
The Christmas party was again a success and allowed members of the beginners group to mingle with the regular players. An excellent spread was organised on an informal basis – thanks to all who contributed and to Sue Sturman for co-ordination. Blackjack was again popular and a thirteen player game of Racing Demon was an entertaining organisational challenge.
I have been running lessons on Monday afternoons and I am considering altering the format to supervised practice sessions if there is sufficient interest. Please let me know if you are interested.
Here is a hand which was dealt by the beginners group last week. It caused some consternation amongst those who are used to dealing with pre-dealt hands where the bidding goes 1NT -3NT.
North South
S AJ9 S –
H AQ65 H KJ874
D AKT3 D J98762
C A5 C 73
There are no good systems for dealing with a hand like this. Because it was the last hand of the evening it was bid slightly extravagantly. North opened 2 NT promising a balanced 20-22 points, South – confident that no trumps was not the right denomination - called a natural if somewhat hesitant 3D and North could think of nothing better to do than bid 6D. When the diamonds split 2-1 all thirteen tricks rolled in relatively easily for a satisfying end to the evening.
